Chad has announced plans to withdraw from the International Criminal Court, citing concerns over the court’s effectiveness and what it described as a disproportionate focus on African countries. The decision follows similar moves by Burkina Faso, Mali and Niger, which have also announced plans to leave the ICC.
The Chadian government said nine of the court’s 13 investigations have focused on African states, arguing that the court’s activities have been unevenly distributed across regions.
The decision reportedly came after a request from the United States for Chad to reconsider its membership. The move comes amid allegations by national and international organisations concerning Chad’s suspected involvement in the conflict in neighbouring Sudan.
