Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has declared a regional state of emergency due to escalating security and political crises in west Africa.
During a ministerial session in Abuja, ECOWAS Commission President Omar Touray highlighted the deteriorating security environment marked by military interventions, unconstitutional changes of government, electoral instability, and the rising influence of terrorists and criminal groups. He emphasized that elections often trigger instability and stressed the urgent need for coordinated regional responses to terrorism and cross-border crime.
Touray further called for more frequent security meetings and prioritized addressing political transitions, humanitarian crises—with over 7.6 million displaced persons—and maintaining regional unity amid external pressures.
