The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has signed the Intergovernmental Agreement for the African Atlantic Gas Pipeline, bringing the Nigeria-Morocco gas pipeline project closer to implementation. The agreement, signed at the ECOWAS Summit in Freetown, Sierra Leone, provides the sovereign backing required to move the project towards construction.
The nearly 6,900-kilometre pipeline, jointly developed by NNPC Limited and Morocco’s ONHYM, is expected to transport 30 billion cubic metres of natural gas annually from Nigeria through 13 West African coastal countries to Morocco and Europe.
NNPC says the project will improve energy access, boost electricity generation, drive industrialisation, deepen regional integration and expand Nigeria’s gas exports. Morocco and Mauritania are expected to sign the agreement before the project proceeds to the next implementation phase
