European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen has called for stronger border controls across Europe after tens of thousands of migrants entered Spain’s North African territory of Ceuta from Morocco.
In a letter to Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez, von der Leyen backed Spain’s response and called for increased border monitoring and the use of physical barriers where necessary. Spanish authorities estimate that about 69,500 migrants have returned to Morocco, while at least 88 people reportedly died attempting to reach Ceuta.
Von der Leyen said the European Union must strengthen cooperation with non-EU countries, improve external border controls, dismantle migrant-smuggling networks and speed up the return of people without legal rights to remain.
