Nigeria will kick off their defense of the WAFU B U-20 Championship title against arch-rivals Ghana today Monday in Yamoussoukro, Ivory Coast, in a match scheduled for 2 p.m. local time (3 p.m. Nigeria time).
The Flying Eagles aim to retain their title after defeating Ghana’s Black Satellites 2-1 in last year’s final in Lomé, Togo, and will be looking for a strong start under new head coach Abdu Maikaba, his first competitive game in charge.
Nigeria’s recent form includes a 2-1 friendly win over Athlétique Club de Zenuola, and their rivalry with Ghana, dating back to 1951, remains one of Africa’s most intense football contests. A victory would position Nigeria well to advance to the semi-finals, with upcoming group matches against Togo and Burkina Faso scheduled for July 30 and August 2. The tournament is hosted by Ivory Coast, with Nigeria competing in Group B alongside Togo and Burkina Faso
