House of Representatives has launched an investigation into the human and economic losses suffered by Nigerians in repeated xenophobic attacks in South Africa.
The probe followed a motion sponsored by Rep Member Babajimi Benson, who said the absence of a comprehensive record of deaths, destroyed properties and financial losses had hindered efforts to secure justice and compensation for affected Nigerians. Benson also called attention to renewed anti-foreigner campaigns in South Africa, warning that they had created fear among Nigerians and negatively impacted their businesses and investments.
The House subsequently mandated its Committees on Integration and Cooperation in Africa and Diaspora, and Foreign Affairs, to investigate the casualties and losses, compile an inventory of abandoned Nigerian-owned properties and recommend measures to strengthen protection and seek compensation for victims.
