Family of Mary Habila, the 26-year-old nurse who died at the country home of Ebonyi State Minister of Works, David Umahi, has petitioned an Ebonyi State court to halt the police investigation into her death and refused an autopsy on her body.

In an affidavit filed on July 13, her father, Tanko Habila, stated that the family did not suspect foul play and did not consent to any autopsy, requesting the body be released for burial.

Mary Habila, who worked at the Federal University of Medical Sciences and served as a personal nurse to Umahi, died on June 27, 2026, in Uburu, after traveling with the minister to his hometown. Despite the family’s refusal, the Ebonyi State Police Command announced that the investigation would continue, citing a distress call received on the day of her death reporting a medical emergency at a hospital in Uburu.
