House of Representatives Ad-Hoc Committee on Rivers State Emergency Rule, led by Prof. Julius Ihonvbere, has ordered the immediate renovation of the dilapidated Rivers State Secretariat and the relocation of civil servants from hazardous work environments.

Following an emergency inspection, the committee found the Secretariat in a deplorable state, with structural hazards, leaking roofs, exposed wiring, and no basic amenities, declaring the 6th and 7th floors unfit for human occupation. The committee also noted delays in the Rivers State House of Assembly project, with the contractor likely to miss the September completion deadline.

The committee also demanded the closure of compromised floors, emergency staff relocation, a transparent bidding process for renovations, and weekly progress reports.

While the State Government, under Vice Admiral Ibok-Ete Ibas, must begin compliance within 48 hours, an emergency contractor meeting has been planned to ensure strict supervision and potential sanctions.
