Nicaragua’s long-serving President Daniel Ortega has declared that the country will no longer hold elections, as he continues to rule alongside his wife, Rosario Murillo.
Ortega, who has been in power since 2007, made the announcement during a speech marking the anniversary of the 1979 Sandinista revolution. The United Nations has accused Ortega and Murillo of turning Nicaragua into an authoritarian state, while opposition figures say the decision reflects fears of losing power through elections.
Ortega has faced international criticism over alleged suppression of political opposition and a crackdown on anti-government protests in 2018, which reportedly left more than 300 people dead.
